This access hole can be used for three different applications.
If you are using a top feeder, you will not have to open the hive to fill it up. Just open the access hole, fill up your feeder and close it again, any time of the day, any day of the year and without disturbing the swarm, quickly and very easily. Save time and money from feeding.
You can also add extra entrances for a large colony of a hive on the second, third, or forth super. This is very useful when you use queen excluders as it gives the bees an entrance above the excluder and directly into the honey super.
This access hole can also be used to add ventilation which is necessary in some hot areas. If used in this manner, you will have to add a piece of screening to bar the entrance of unwanted pests.
In all cases, you will need to cut a 4cm hole and screw the access hole onto the wood or metal part of the hive. Centre the access hole on the hole and fasten it with at least 2 screws. The use of silicon between the cover and the access might be needed in rainy areas, but if you use 4 screws to fasten the access hole, it will be flat and should not need silicon.
Do not paint the access holes. This could cause a chemical reaction and damage it.
